No. You do not need a physician’s referral or prescription to attend physical therapy. In Pennsylvania (and most other states) you can make an appointment with a physical therapist directly, without needing a physician’s referral.
While your physician may give you a recommendation and your insurance plan may guide you with regard to who is “in network,” the decision as to whom you see for care is up to you.
On your first visit, your Physical Therapist will take time to get to know your medical history and discuss your personal challenges and goals. They will perform a thorough evaluation which may include specific assessments, tests, and/or taking measurements. Your Physical Therapist will then design and begin to immediately implement a program fully customized for you. Please note, it is a good idea to arrive 15 minutes early for your first visit to allow time for completing any necessary paperwork.
The treatments you receive will depend on the initial evaluation and discussion with you. Most of our plans of care include manual therapy techniques, biomechanical and neuromuscular re-education, therapeutic exercise, electrical stimulation, blood flow restriction therapy, kinesiology taping and functional training in sport, work, or home-related tasks.
Your first visit will last approximately 45-60 minutes. Follow-up appointments vary in length and are dependent upon the type of injury, complexity of the case, and level of rehabilitation. Usually, follow-up appointments last approximately 60 minutes, but are occasionally shorter or longer.
Your Physical Therapist will quantify and qualify your physical deficits during your first visit. At certain intervals and as required throughout your program, they will conduct complete reevaluations. Your Physical Therapist will then compare new measurements with your baseline measurements to demonstrate objective and subjective improvements.
The answer depends on your evaluation, diagnosis, and prognosis. Most patients would benefit from continuing their program through some form of maintenance plan. Also, most patients would benefit from continuing to use the same therapist because no one else will have as much detailed and documented information about your therapy history and physical capability. Our commitment to you is for a life-time of health regardless of the number of visits this requires.
TPT accepts most major insurance providers. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding your specific insurance. We also have self-payment options available for those without insurance.
